South Africa
At the southern end of the Black Continent, wine has been produced for several hundred years. Since the eighteenth century, Constantia has been brewed here, a highly desirable beverage exported exclusively to the royal tables of Europe. In modern times, South Africa has survived the period of mass production and is now a growing wine power, boldly reaching for further awards in the industry. Pinotage is certainly the country’s landmark, but many other grape varieties are grown successfully, from Rieslings, Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay to sophisticated Pinot Noir and serious Shiraz that can compete with mighty wines from Australia. South Africa has a lot to offer to wine lovers and certainly hasn’t said its last word yet.
